Cringing Wolf is a wolf who was ousted from his pack because he was dominated by fear. Yakari took an interest in Cringing Wolf and (with the help of the beavers) made an obstacle course to train Cringing Wolf to be stronger and braver.
It took a while, but Cringing Wolf succeeded. But then Restful Wolf appeared, telling Yakari and Cringing Wolf that, despite completing his training, Cringing Wolf would not be accepted, unless he found himself a mate and could care for her.
