Snowball is a rare white bear Yakari met. Snowball has suffered a lot of teasing and bullying because his white fur makes him different, so he's moved on several times, trying to find a place to call home.
Yakari and Rainbow, at first, mistake him for a ghost but then Yakari befriends him, and they bond over a meal of beries and Snowball sharing his story with Yakari. Unfortunately, Snowball's white fur catches the ruthless eye of Quick Bow, who hunts rare animals, especially the ones with white fur. At first, Yakari thinks Snowball should leave but he refuses, tired of being forced to leave just because he's different. However, advice from Great Eagle enables Yakari to figure out what to do.
Working together, Yakari and Snowball (disguised black by rolling in berry juice and with the help of some bats) scare Quick Bow off. Snowball considers keeping the color so as not to be teased, but Yakari tells him that doing so would make Snowball something he is not, and helps him feel better about himself.
Snowball and Yakari reunite some time later over a hive of honey, and again Quick Bow seeks to add Snowball's fur to his collection. This time, he kidnaps Rainbow to force Yakari to lead him to Snowball. But the young Sioux, working together with Little Thunder, Snowball, and a Hare Rainbow healed, outsmart the ruthless hunter yet again.
